Utica

Utica references appear in Peter's letters both before and during the Civil War, offering interesting historical tidbits. Clarinda moved a few times without Peter's approval during the eighteen months that Peter was in the 146th. Although the addresses were not listed, he did comment on her living quarters, giving a glimpse of life in Utica during the War. His recollections of going to fun events in Utica with her before the War are also of interest.

A series of letters about Clarinda accepting assistance from Peter's employers at Hart and Dagwell and from the City ('Ward money') without his approval provide more context. Harwood's daguerrotype shop, where Peter's sister worked and he and his father may have been previously employed, is mentioned in several letters. Other companies, landmarks, and elected officials are mentioned.
